March 3rd 2008 — The Art of NORMA ALLENDE

NORMA ALLENDEARTIST           After working in stained glass for a few years I have focused my creativity in making new work in clay, fused glass and metal. The plasticity of clay together with the transparency of glass has opened the door to a whole world of new possibilities     My work is the result of a constant dialogue with the materials. Sometimes I start with an idea, others the medium dictates the idea. I feel great respect for the intrinsic expression of the materials I work with, and I want its qualities to manifest through my forms. I am always inspired by the human figure, even in my abstract work. I am also inspired by the challenging opposite forces that shape the Universe. I like to challenge the nature of the material in the same way I like to challenge my own life.  This means to bring the material to its limits, to do what nobody thinks it can do.  My sculptures are not as much about the mass but about the space contained by it.  Sometimes I think about myself on shaping the space more that shaping the clay. This idea is transmitted to the representation of spiritual realms shaping the external  Exhibiting my work is for me a “self-push”.  I am practicing Buddhism19 years.  I always had trouble with showing my work and I hope this exhibit will encourage me to do more and show more. Also I hope to bring some friends to visit the Queens Community Center to learn about our organization through exhibits at the World Peace Cafe.
